How often should I bathe my dog with flea shampoo?

I got a 9 month old beagle about a week ago %26amp; noticed he was itching a lot so I assumed he has fleas.I went out and bought some Flea shampoo %26amp; on the bottle it says it is effective for 10 days...does that mean I have to wash him every week %26amp; a half until the itching stops? Is is ok for his skin to get shampooed this much? Also, if his skin does dry out, what can I use to rub in his fur and make it better? Thank you!How often should I bathe my dog with flea shampoo?
Even if you used the shampoo already, still use the Front line stuff. You can get it at the vet's. It works amazingly well.... It's all I've ever used, and then just vacuum thoroughly. (make sure not to bathe him for the period recommended by Frontline). Good luck! How often should I bathe my dog with flea shampoo?
You ever hear the old saw about assumptions?

If you didn't get him from a reputable breeder or an ASPCA shelter, fleas are a possibility, but what you ought to have done is take him to the vet right off.

Getting a basic check-up, and making sure he's caught up on his puppy immunizations, is just basic good dog ownership. Also, though this might be from fleas, it may also be an allergy, and only a vet can tell you which. Then, too, you will want to start him on Heartgard and Frontline Plus, the easiest way to control those pests that can most seriously threaten and impair you and your pet's happy lives.

A basic rule of thumb: never self-diagnose your dog. You don't have the training, and making a mistake can do incredible damage.
Do shampoo him too often, itching doesn't necessarily mean fleas, it could be an irriation of the skin and the shampoo could make it worse.

One of my dogs used to itch when his puppy fur was coming out so this could be another reason why he is itching.

See how he goes over the next few weeks. You can get flea drops that you put on the back of their neck and that lasts for a month so you need to apply it monthly.
Yep, that's what it means. You should also use methods like flea bombs, fabric spray, drops, and flea collars. But, your best bet is to use frontline. It's expensive (about 30-40 bucks a box), but each droplet container lasts a month and you get a 3 month pack. It's the best at getting rid of fleas. And they'll be gone forever! Trust me, my 3 dogs have had fleas many times (due to my sister's inability to take care of her animals and them bring them over for a ';visit';) and frontline works like a charm! Just read the directions well. And, really, it doesn't cost that much if you compare it to the prices you'll be paying to buy shampoo and other products every week/month.
Don't. It is far too often to shampoo an dog plus flea shampoos are not much use - they get rid of a few adult fleas but the eggs and larvae hatch and the fleas come right back.

The ONLY thing that works completely and keeps fleas, eggs, and larvae off your dog are name brand topical flea preventatives - Advantix or Frontline Plus are excellent.

You apply these on the back of the dog's neck, part the hair, put on skin - and it keeps your dog flea free all month.

That simple and nothing else works anywhere near as well.

Before the liquids were invented, dogs had fleas no matter what you did. Just apply one every single month, no more fleas or ticks.
Use frontline or any of those name brands for flea treatment, don't shampoo, it dries there skin and that's way to much toxin for his body, I give my small dog a fast shower, no soap, it helps with itchiness. If you just brush him it should encourage the nature oil in his skin to come up. it's not always fleas, I have a yorkie-poo who just likes to aly in the sun, I know she's getting by something, maybe a fire-ant, (SC). she likes to sun herself :)
I buy my adult dog a flea shampoo at Wal Mart and in the summer I give the dog a flea bath once per week or every other week in the summer depending on the weather. I live down south. I do not give the dog a bath during the winter as the dog should not have a bath in cold or very cool weather. You can buy Advantage or Frontline at your vet's.
Have you SEEN fleas? If you haven't seen fleas, how do you know the itching is from fleas? Take the dog to the vet. It may have some skin problem, or allergies. But just treating for something because that is the first thing that comes to your mind, is not the way to treat a problem.

Take the dog to the vet.
Only as symptoms occur should you use this chemical that is not fragile on a thin skin such as a dog. Use it maybe, once every three weeks? But if he does not have fleas, don't waste your money, and don't hurt the beagles coat of soft fur. If it dries out, get a vetrinarian and see what they reccomend.
You need to buy Frontline Plus, it's the only flea treatment that l have found to work, flea shampoo, collars and all other pet store bought flea treatments are a waste of money, they don't work effectively.

Since l started using Frontline my two Labs haven't had a problem with fleas.
Just because you're dog is itching doesn't necessarily mean that he/she has fleas. He could have dry skin or allergies. It's important to inspect your dog's fur before bathing. Flea bath shampoo should only be used when absolutely necessary since it get utlimately make your dog sick.
If you use flea shampoo too much it could make itching worse so if you have to use one get one with oatmeal in it or a sensitive skin version. its better to get monthly flea treatments and just bath it with plain oatmeal shampoo whenever it gets dirty or stinky.
you should be PRE-treating your dog for fleas with a topical medication, not cleaning him after he gets them

most dogs don't need to be bathed more than a few times a year, it dries out their skin and can cause their coat to lose it's luster.
You should only use flea and tick shampoo as a last resort. It contains harsh chemicals that can dry out the skin and can make the dog sick if he ingests too much through licking. Try a topical flea treatment such as Frontline or Advantage. They work so much better anyway.
I agree with the first answer. Go to the vet and get some frontline or advantix. It will be so much more effective.
well i think u should wash him at least 1 every 2 months
you should use frontlin for your dogs fleas its just a little oily liquid that goes on the back of your dogs neck!
Depending on how many fleas you have in your place..it can take up to 3-4 months before you are flea free.

What the medications do from the vet..they are liquid or a pill given to your dog. The medication then goes into your dog system and starts working and continues to work for a month. The medication will do one of two things, it will either kill the adult fleas whenever they bite your dog for food or they will make it so their eggs can not hatch.

Now home remedies... some people will suggest things like dish soap and garlic.. Garlic is toxic to a dog and it should not be given to them. Dish soap may help to get rid of the fleas on your dog at that moment but it will not help kill any that jump onto your dog a few hours later..also dish soap strips out natural oils in your dogs skin so you can't use it more then once.

Other products... flea collars..most flea collars do not work. flea shampoos and powders react the same way dish soap does. Flea sprays...these can be know to be effective..but they are highly toxic and if you have baseboards your will have little success. This is b/c flea eggs and larva bury themselves really deep into the carpet and baseboards. Flea bombs...again highly toxic.

Sometimes part of this issue is outside the house. An exterminator will need to be called to deal with them.

Vacuuming... a single tool that can be helpful. This can help to pick up dead and alive adult fleas. But you have to be careful. the bag needs to be tightly closed and disposed of asap.

Do you have other pets? All pets need to be treated with the medication..this includes other dogs, cats and even rabbits. Since fleas rely on an animal blood to reproduce not giving just one animal medication can help add to the problem.

Here's a website with more information and a list of different medications used.. revolution is a well recommended brand
